The Nikon D3s gets an award

Just another dagger in the heart for the Canon rainforest photographer, the Nikon D3s body just won a Popular Science award as one of the best new tech items of 2010. You’ll notice that I laud this camera in the Rainforest Photography Gear Guide on this site. I had the chance to use it in May thanks to my photographer friends and photo tour clients from France and was blown away by its high ISO performance. If you didn’t believe me, click here to see the press report on Nikon’s site. I love Canon gear for lots of reasons, but I sure wish they would come out with a camera body with the high ISO perfromance of the D3s.

Cheers,

Greg

Greg, I shoot at ISO 1000 with my Canon 5D Mark II and have no noise problem. I’ll sure that when I get my Canon 1D Mark IV it’ll be even better.

Hi, Don. I totally agree. I shoot my 5D Mark I at ISO 1000 with confidence too. But the Nikon D3s allows you to shoot at ISO 3200 with confidence, and even ISO 6400 can yield publication quality results. I was skeptical at first but amazed at the results when I was able to get the Nikon D3s images into the computer at my home office. So, while I do love the Canon 5D bodies and appreciate the advantages of the good high ISO performance those full-frame sensors afford, the Nikon D3s really is in a different league.

That said, the 21 MP of the 5DII for landscape at low ISOs sure is great to have. That’s actually a big advantage if you are a landscape shooter looking to make big prints of course. And at $2500 or so, the Canon 5D Mark II is half the price of the Nikon D3s. But, for rainforest shooters like me where high ISO performance is perhaps the important feature in a camera body, the 12 MP Nikon D3s would be an incredible tool to have.

By the way, I think it’s a toss up whether the noise performance of the Mark IV high ISOs will be better than the 5DII. From what I’ve seen (anecdotally mind you) it’s about the same deal. But the Mark IV is definitely a great camera too and obviously has big AF and frame rate advantages over the 5D Mark II. Having both bodies will be awesome for you!

    Cheers,
    Greg

Well, That could be good for canon, because the company have to wake up a little bit. I am canon user, but, I have a couple negative experiences, and other friends too, in the other hands, nikon users I know (who are the mayority in Nicaragua), are plainty happy with their machines.

I am not pro, and maybe I am wrong, but Canon look for me in a conffort-zone, 50d have been seen as a step back in ISO and HDR technology, and 7d produce problems since the first day of launch, as canon user I am waiting more of the company I choose, for the reasons I did, (exellent natural image, soft and realistic tones, good autofocus tech, nice and well designed lens).

Finally just want to share this video. I hope understand my words, I am a happy canon user, =)
