Great, Ryan. Thanks very much for sharing your experience, and I'm glad you're getting good results. As you pointed out, sharpness definitely improves with a TC by stopping down the lens a bit from wide open.

Cheers,
Greg

Bought the 2x extender III this summer after reading your review!

I use it with the 400mm 5.6L on my 5D Mark II. The image quality is very good and the cheapest way to get 800mm with a full-frame camera. Just took a bunch of eagle pictures on Vancouver island.

Manual focus takes practice, but autofocus does work through live view using contrast detection. I can actually get shots handheld as low as 1/60 of a second on burst mode.

Most people seem disappointed after using the extender, saying the images are "too soft". As you mention, sharpness improves a lot when the lens is stopped down. I find images are soft wide open (at least on the 400mm 5.6L), but stopped down a click (a third of a stop), most of the softness goes away. Most of the time I shoot at F13 on the 400mm.

I can post some pictures (along with some 100% crops) if anyone is interested.

Hi, Anne-Marie. It actually will not work because of the lens and TC elements extending out into one another. I have tried a Tamron teleconverter on this lens but the results weren't good. That's not the fault of the teleconverter but simply due to the 70-300 not being a great match for use with TCs. I enjoy the 70-300 on its own for all of the things it does and then reach for my bigger lens when I want more reach.

Cheers,
Greg

Good deal, Steve. With the Lightroom 4 beta offering selective noise reduction, the technique in the video will be one I probably won't use once the LR 4 release is official. It will be a joy for me to be able to stay in Lightroom, but the technique in the video still works for those who prefer PS.

Cheers,
Greg

thanks, Greg. As always, I get a great deal of value from your website. After reading, I ordered the 2X III which I will use mostly with the new 70-200 f/2.8.

I do have both the old and new 1.4x and they both seem pretty similar to me on my trip to Galapagos.

Hi, Daniele. No bother at all; I enjoy interacting with fellow nature photographers. Yes, I use a Manfrotto magnesium fiber tripod (though I am going to change soon to an Induro strictly to gain more height), the RRS BH-55 ballhead, and the Wimberley Sidekick.

Cheers,
Greg
