The New Canon 1D X

Finally, Canon has announced a new pro DSLR body, the EOS 1D X. They have merged the 1D and 1Ds lines to produce an 18 MP full-frame sensor body, purportedly with the low noise capabilities of a full-frame sensor plus the action capabilities of the Mark IV (sound familiar, Nikon shooters?). New Digic processors promise stunning image quality and an increase in high ISO performance. This feature will be of particular interest to me. An in-camera multiple exposure mode sounds interesting too. Would these files be valid for the BBC/Veolia Wildife Photographer of the Year competition? Hmm… And an electronic first shutter curtain apparently does away with the need for mirror lockup — cool!

I’ll be trying to get my hands on one for sure for a review when it comes out. Will it be a Nikon D3s killer? For an announced price of US $6800 it had better be!

You can see the whole press release here at the Canon site  (also the source of the picture here).

What do you think about the new camera?

Cheers,

Greg

PS — Lots more info from Canon here and a lot of discussion here.

  1. Well, personally I have been waiting for a fast full frame like this one si I am loving it just for that, now I hope it actually performs as expected!! So far, for what I was able to read about it, loving everything except the ridiculuous price. :)

For sure on the price, Ramon! Although I guess if you look at it, it’s pretty much between the Mark IV and the 1Ds III when it was announced. I’m sure eager to see if the high ISO performance is everything they claim. If it’s two stops better than the Mark IV, then I’d think about selling my Mark IV to finance the new body. Just watch though — Nikon will come out with a D4s where ISO 25,600 looks like 6400 on the 1D X! Anyway, it’s always fun to speculate :-)

    Hi Greg.

Just reading and my mouth is already melting…
Yes, I would love to be able to buy this camera. The HD capabilities are also tempting if one likes to make some good quality video.

Hi, Juan Carlos. Indeed — looks very cool!

A few high ISO samples here — small jpegs but ISO 12800 looks remarkably good. Of course if these were shot in jpeg then the performance could be due to improvements in in-camera noise reduction rather than to the sensor. And again, these are small — but still…
