Back in the mid-1990s, while studying environmental politics and tropical ecology in grad school in St. Louis, MO, I worked at the world-renowned Missouri Botanical Garden. It was a great experience that taught me a lot about tropical plants and also produced some lasting contacts. These contacts led me to propose an idea for a public exhibit at the Garden in the space where numerous well-known photographers (e.g., Robert Glenn Ketchum, Frans Lanting) have exhibited their works. The Garden accepted, and we’ve been working together on a Costa Rica photographic exhibit for the past year. I leave tomorrow for the US to help oversee the final installation; the exhibit will run from January 8 through mid-March. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Jim Kalkbrenner, the Garden’s exhibits manager, my sister Terri Basco-Hill, artist and graphic designer who helped oversee the image selection, printing, and exhibit design, and my brother-in-law Devon Hill, a professional photographer who also lent his great photographic eye to the image selection and print proofing process. In all, there will be 33 images displayed at sizes ranging from 20×30 to 30×45 and even one panoramic print measuring 30 x100 inches. I can’t wait to see it!

My brother-in-law Devon, who is also a professional videographer, will be helping me to produce a short “making of the exhibit” video that I hope will be entertaining and educational. We’ll combine some clips of the printing and installation process, along with some interviews, and audio commentary by me on how I captured the images featured in the show. So, stay tuned!

For now, you can see a slideshow of the exhibit images or you can visit my website’s print store if you might want to hang one of these images on the walls of your own home or office.

How about an update on how the exhibit is going?

  3. Greg Basco says:

Hi, Doug. Just returned a couple of days ago from the US and will be getting to this soon. The exhibit looks great though, and I was able to give a nice slideshow talk to the Missouri Nature Photographers’ Network — 120 people in attendance, a new record!

    Cheers,
    Greg
