BLACK ON BLACK 1

Black guan were formerly hunted as a game bird in Costa Rica. They, along with all other wild animals, are now protected, and the black guan population has increased. These turkey-like birds of the cloud forest are most active in the very early morning and right at the end of the day. In addition to feeding up in the trees, black guan drop down to the ground to feed on fallen fruits and seeds, making it easy to predict where they will be.

I used food to attract he black guan to an exact spot at the edge of a cloud forest in Costa Rica. I then set up a remotely-triggered flash with a baffle for a spotlight effect that would hint at the birds' crepuscular habits. I loved the black on black look, and the way the lighting makes their interesting faces stand out.
