Every year by the tens of thousands, Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) return to lay eggs on the very same Costa Rican beach where they hatched out to begin their lives. Driven by atavistic evolutionary traits, females make this epic effort as they have done for millions of years in order to pass on their genes to a new generation. Emerging at the edge of light, the female turtles struggle to near exhaustion while laying the eggs. Two months later, hatchlings emerge and, though as few as 1% may survive, a new generation is born, and the cycle continues.

Two years ago, I made a trek out to Costa Rica's Pacific Coast and Playa Ostional to photograph sea turtles for my coffee table book on this country's natural wonders. I was struck by the sense of epic struggle as the sun began to set, and the turtles emerged like ghosts from the ocean. I shot quickly in the fleeting light, using a graduated neutral density filter to balance the light between foreground and sky. My hope was to capture something that would approximate the feelings I had while witnessing this amazing event. This shot was the result.
